What Belongs in the Audit File Before Fieldwork Starts

A practical packing list for Taiwanese finance teams preparing for their first annual audit with an outside firm.

Stacked document folders prepared for an audit

Most delays in an annual financial statement audit come from missing schedules rather than from disagreements over accounting policy. When Smartnetlab begins fieldwork, we expect a trial balance that ties to the draft statements, bank reconciliations for every account, and a fixed-asset roll-forward that explains additions and disposals.

Cash cut-off is another frequent gap. Provide the last five days of receipts and disbursements around the balance-sheet date, plus confirmations already requested from major banks. Related-party ledgers should list every entity under common ownership, even if balances are small.

Inventory clients should prepare count sheets and a location map before we arrive. Trading companies often overlook goods in transit; a simple schedule of open purchase orders near year-end prevents last-minute scramble.

Finally, keep the prior-year management letter nearby. Showing how each point was addressed saves hours of repeated inquiry and signals that the finance team treats control issues as ongoing work rather than a one-time scramble.
